QUESTION:
I have a York Central Air gas furnace, heat does not work?
I have a four year old York Central Air gas furnace. The fan works but the heating or cooling systems does not come on. When I switch the fan on it works, when i switch to heat, the furnace starts then shuts down. the same thing happens when i switch to the cool system. I have tried turning the electrical power for the whole house off. There are no breakers for the system. What can I do to fix the heating system?
-
ANSWER:
Guessing with a York system you have a condensating / high efficiency furnace. With both the heat and a/c not working then the only thing they have in common is the condensate drain. The drain has safeties on it to prevent water damage. Find the drain and trace it out from start to end and make sure it is not clogged. See if there is a small box with a plastic hose going to it on the side, either left or right, make sure it is clear. Then reset the system at the breaker and start as normal. If still having problems then its more than likely the circuit board is bad. Hope this helps

QUESTION:
York gas furnace 9 red flashing light fault code fixes?
Can't seem to fix a 9 red flashing light fault code (ground wire or polarity issue) on a York GY9 90+ furnace. From the unit there is only 2 wire (blk & wht) with no green (grn) wire. Grounding seems to be done at the control board. I have my wiring starting at the circuit box with my blk wire in the breaker my wht wire at the grounding terminal strip along with a uninsulated copper ground located somewhere else but on this same grnding strip. Those wires go to a junction box where I switched from Rom-ex out from the circuit box to MC wire and wire nutted blk to blk, wht to wht, and copper uninsulated to green insulated. This goes down to the switch, blk to blk from the unit,... white to rt side of toggle switch & white from the unit goes to the bottom of that toggle switch. Green continues into the unit and is grnd to the units metal plating below the gas piping area. Fault code 9 appears. I switch polarity at the junction box where my Rom-ex switched over to MC, and still got the same fault. I check my ground at different locations ......same fault. Got 120v to the control board, and to the transformer which is putting out 28v on the other side. Still i reset the safety switch to cut the pwr and restart .....FAULT 9 AGAIN...what am i missing here??

QUESTION:
York gas furnace will not come on..at all.?
I have a York gas furnace and no part of the ignition sequence is starting from what I can tell, nor is the LED light even on much less blinking a code. My old Honeywell thermostat was showing a code of -AC. I've read that code can mean no power to the air handler, but on the outside chance it was the 15 year old thermostat, I replaced it with a brand new Lux. No help. The fan doesn't even come on when switched to fan. I located the LED indicator light and it's not blinking a code. It's not even on. There is no odd smell when I opened the panel where the motor and all the wires are located (there was a smell when the motor burned out about 5 months ago). There is a tech scheduled to come out in 4 days, but it's getting pretty chilly here. Is there anything else I can safely troubleshoot? BTW, I did check the fuse box and there was no fuse blown.
I have read posts that says there is a fuse in a furnace system that could be blown but I can't locate it in mine. The user manual mentions multiple switches (blower door, rollout, pressure, limit control, and auxiliary limit control), along with the ignition system checkout steps. What it does not mention in either the parts list or the troubleshooting section is a fuse. It also doesn't say that if any of the switches are triggered that power to the entire unit would be cutoff. It does mention the LED error codes, but not lack of LED light. If it is a fuse does anyone know where it is located and can I replace it or does it have to be done by a tech. Would any of the switches being triggered cut power to the entire unit.
I do not see any external box of type mentioned. The unit is a York P2MP 32-112 MBH Output (Horizontal Left Installation). Thanks for all of your input thus far.

QUESTION:
York Gas Control Valve on 11 y/o Furnace, Lifetime warranty - 0?
Horizon is asking around 0 to replace the gas control valve on our 11 year old York gas furnace. I have used them for other HVAC items, but this one seems outrageously expensive. They said the level of Carbon Monoxide in the exhaust pipe is 1,000 ppm and that if the exhaust pipe leaks into the house then we "could die in 5 minutes".
Of course my wife wanted to get it done, but I thought it was a scare tactic. I am not going to breathe from the exhaust pipe!

QUESTION:
What could possibly be wrong with my gas furnace?
Hi, I have a York Diamond 80 gas furnace.
The furnace runs normally for about 5-6 hours and about 5-6 cycles; after that, the red indicator light comes on and the furnace doesn't work anymore until the power is reset (as in the circuit breaker is reset). Then, the furnace runs for another 5-6 hours/cycles then stops once again.
We've tested, and there's definitely no problem with the limit switch or flame sensor.

QUESTION:
York Stellar gas furnace problems. Fustrated please help?
I have a new motor, new capacitor, and new thermostat but furnace wont stay at the set tempature( we have it set to 72 degrees, but house temp is 60 degrees, unless i turn up the tempature), and furnace comes on and off multiple times.
we thought it was the thermostat, but it didnt fix this problem. we are constantly having to move the temp up to get the house warm. there is always a small humming noise coming from the ents at all times.
so, there is a dial on the furnace with little movable tabs. what are they suppose to be set too?
im not paying a repair man dollars just to look at it, untill i exhaust all possible self repairs that i can.
motor and capacitor were replaced about a month ago. igniter was replaced sometime in the past couple years. we even had to pay a guy, that just had to clean leaves out of it.
i do have a sofa over an intake register, sofa is 3-4 inches off the ground though.
we encountered this problem when i turned the heat all the way down for a warm day, and when i turned it up it started the problems.
the past month or so has always had a 4 degree difference in the set temp and house temp though. thus thats why i replaced the thermastat with a digital.
furnace i belaieve is 10-15 years old.
sorry it was lengthy, but im hoping i gave all the info. cause im just tired of googling and not finding the problem.

ANSWER:
Sounds to me that when the blower was installed it may have been connected to the wrong speed, blowers will usually have any were from 3 to 5 speeds. If you have the manuel for the blower and or the furnace look to see what speed the blower should be set at. It may just have to be simply reconnected to a slower or faster speed you want slow(er) for heat fast(er) for cool those connections are mostly located at the circuit control board. if the board has spaces that say PARK those are reserved for speed connectors that are not in use. But it should have in the same location spaces that say Low, Low-med, Med,med-Hi, HI.
Hope this helps. also blocking intake vents will almost always cause problems sooner or later.

QUESTION:
Why won't my York furnace blow warm air?
My electric ignition natural gas York furnace stopped working. After much troubleshooting I found that the burners aren't lighting. I can light them manually by sticking a match in the right place at the right time (when the thermostat start things up), but this obviously isn't a real solution... or probably safe. What should I look for? Is there a user-serviceable part I can replace?

I've had to turn the system off on this the hottest day of the year so far -- it's supposed to be above 100 degrees today. Need to get some advice but do plan to call the insurance company tomorrow. Just ned to get an insght into the cause of the problem. Thanks.

QUESTION:
I have a York furnace that blows air but wont turn the Gas on?
-
ANSWER:
Most newer furnaces will lock out the burner and run the fan continuously when a limit switch has tripped.
There are usually a few in there, most the type that has to be reset by pushing in the button and a high limit that resets automatically when cooled back down.
Check the control board for a blinking LED for a code that would help trouble shoot.
I assume you have checked the filter.
Turning power off and back on usually resets any lockout but will also erase any fault code

QUESTION:
Gas Furnace Question?
Looking to have our 1978 York Diamond 80 gas furnace replaced. We are trying to figure out if we should have a 80% or 90% ?? furnace installed and is it worth the extra $$. Can someone with HVAC experience please give us your opinion and why (other than the 90% is possibly more efficient). Thanks!
Also, if someone who is a HVAC contractor can help me with this. I heard that both oversizing and undersizing a new unit is bad for different reasons. My current furnace is 80,000BTU's and the house is about 2950sq ft. Its a colonial home in the north east (PA). I was told I should have about 110,000 BTU from a contractor, but I dont know how to check it myself. Thanks!
-
ANSWER:
Look at it this way and you can understand better. A furnace efficiency is actually telling you how much of your money you are throwing up the chimney. On an 80% efficiency furnace for every dollar you spend for gas, 20 cents of it you are sending up the chimney and throwing away. A 95% efficiency furnace wastes just 5 cents of every dollar.
Now I am not a math major and don't understand this as I can't figure out how it worked but I bought a older home 5 years ago and the first winter my 75% efficient furnace cost me between 5 and 5 each month to heat it. One year of that was enough so I bought a 93+% efficient GOODMAN furnace and had it installed. M heating bills dropped to 0 to 5 a month and thats far more like a 50% savings. WHY? I have no idea, and I don't care. My gas bills dropped so far that the gas company came to the house to see if I had put in a wood stove.
Believe me when I say "GET THE BEST HIGH EFFENCY FURNACE YOU CAN AFFORD" It won't take long for it to pay for itself.

QUESTION:
York PC-9 furnace problem, locking out.?
I have a York model # PC-9,modulating natural gas furnace which sometimes it will work, then lock out after a few minutes or it will just lock out before it will fire. According to the fault code in the manual 3 red flashing lights is the pressure switch stuck open. I think it might be the pressure switch on the circuit board cutting it out? I checked the inlet, outlet pipe and the drain lines for obstructions, seems ok. Checked hoses for obstructions and cracks seems ok. If the little pressure switch is bad on the board, do I have to change the whole board or just plug in a new pressure switch to the board? Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you.
-
ANSWER:
I would check the vent to see if it was clear. Go on the roof if needed to check the vent cap. Could be something blocking the exhaust air which prevents the pressure switch from closing. Check the drain. Those are condensing furnaces that drain water.
There's a warranty on parts, so if your unit is still covered, I would call a dealer. Otherwise, you can remove the switch and replace it and not the circuit board.
Don't forget the filter.

QUESTION:
Converting from Oil to Gas and Cost of Furnace?
I just bought a house and the furnace is over 20 years old and runs on oil and it has limited life remaining according to the inspector! There is a gas line in the house and if possible, I would like to switch from oil to gas when I replace the furnace. At the same time, I would also like to install central air. Does anyone have a rough estimate of what it would cost to convert and install a new heating and cooling system? We live in central new york. I have tried googling but haven't had any luck.
-
ANSWER:
call a couple of heating contractors up and get some estimates. But before you do that you should decide on what brand heater and A/C you want . You can get those prices afore hand so you will then have an idea of what the change over will cost.
One word of advice,,,,,,never sign a contract on the day you get an estimate. think it over. And dont be pressured. Remember you already have heat for the winter.

QUESTION:
When should I replace my furnace?
I have a 1993 Fraser-Johnson (York) single stage gas furnace. The heat exchanger was replaced in 2008-still under warranty! Very few problems since it was originally installed as I get it inspected yearly. Is it too old to be energy efficient? I need to plan for the expenditure when I do need a new one.
-
ANSWER:
I have been doing heating and air for over 10 years and have changed furnaces out that were 30 years old. Now a furnace that is 15 years old should be around 80% effective a newer one could be up to 96% effective depending on the money you want to spend. Yes a new one is much better and I would suggest a two stage furnace to cut down on the cost of running the furnace. The two stage will run in low when it is maintaining the temp in your house instead of high, this will help save you money. Newer furnaces make less noise than older ones. But to tell you the truth furnaces are the last to brake on a system, and if your heat exchanger was just changed it is now like new that is the largest part on a furnace.

QUESTION:
Furnace pilot light won't stay on after tune-up?
Help!
I have an 18 years old York gas furnace. I have not had tune-up for a couple years but it worked fine till they finished the tune-up yesterday morning. Before the technician left, it seemed to work. But when I came home at night, the pilot lite was not on. Another tech came twice.. once found the gas pressure was set wrong. Then that still did not fix the problem. The pilot seems to go out after heating. Then he replaced the themo couple and cleaned it. It stayed on all day till tonight. It does not go out every time now but still goes out. The tech said next to replace is the gas valve which will cost about 0 and not sure if it will fix it either. I feel cursed to have the tune-up since it was fine and never have trouble with pilot till they touched yesterday. Of course, now they said I should get a new furnace. I just spent money on roof but not ready for furance. What is the suggestions here? Should I get new furnace or gas valve? Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions.
So far the pilot light stayed on all night with no problem (longest since tune-up), so could it still be Valve problem? Also, I want to bring it to your attention. They said my 2 filters were old style not effecient (mental), so they sold me a disposable one for . There were 2 filters but now he only put in one. Could that cause it? Also found the humidifier was not on for years, so they turned that on.
I am not inclined to change to valve myself. But they said if the valve does not work, it can't be returned. I am afraid to toss that money away. Besides, I just checked they charged me for thermocouple because I had contract or they said will be . If the valve is so expensive and can't be return, then my 0 will be wasted. If this keeps happening, should I just replace the furnace? What do you recommend for a 2000 sq house that has 2 floors.
furnace is in the basement, should not have draft.

QUESTION:
furnace question?
I just had a new York gas furnace put in by PSE&G. But there are problems. First the when the motor start running, the home vibrates, 2nd when the blower starts, it makes this very high pitch humming noise, it's very annoying especially at night. PSE&G managed to fix the first problem, but insists the 2nd problem is normal. It's hard to believe that a new furnace is designed to be this loud and can wake people up at night.
Does anyone know anything about this brand. I don't know what to do now.
thank you.
It's on low speed for heat now.

ANSWER:
It sounds like the duct system may not be the proper size. They should have performed a load calculation to find the proper size unit. It just sounds like a very poor installation. Also, according to my source, York units only receive a ** of ***** rating. For more info, check out the furnace page at my source.

Preferably, in a large city, yoiu will want to get references. Ask around where you work or socialize. There are heating and air conditioner specialists around by the dozens. You do ot want to get ripped off by some one who is unscrulpulous. Get a complete estimate in writing, start to finish, including disposing of the old furnace. You may want to consider having the air ducts professionally cleaned at this time.

QUESTION:
I have a 4 year old York electric furnace that is blowing cold air.?
Upon removing the cover I noticed that the gas never ignites. The switch is on, the gas is on and the thermostat is cranked. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
-
ANSWER:
First off, you have a gas furnace with an electric blower. If you had an "electric" furnace, you wouldn't be talking about gas. Electric furnaces have heating elements, NOT gas burners that fail to light.
First, check that the pilot light is lit. Just because you have a supply of gas to the unit, means nothing. If you have no pilot light, light it.
If the pilot light is lit, yet still no ignition, replace the thermocouple. The thermocouple would look like a cylindrical pencil sized unit about 3 inches long. A thermocouple is a junction between two different metals that produces a voltage related to a temperature difference.
If replacing the thermocouple doesn't work, then the solenoid (that activates when the thermocouple supplies it with voltage) that's connected to the valve to release the gas to be burned, is more then likely the culprit. You'll have to replace the solenoid unit.
Follow this. Your thermostat closes an elecrtical circuit that increases the flame to heat the thermocouple. The temperature increase of the thermocouple causes the dissimilar metals to induce a voltage in the circuit containing the solenoid which releases gas to the main burner.
No voltage from the thermocouple = no electric to the solenoid = no gas to the burner. Without the thermocouple supplying the solenoid with electric, you'll have no gas released to burn because it won't open the valve (that's the safety feature to keep from blowing your house from its foundation).
9 times out of 10, it's the thermocouple that's gone bad. Try replacing it.

QUESTION:
My gas furnace is blowing cold air?
OK so last year my thermostat would be set on heat, the temp would go lower then what was set but then the heat wouldn't turn on, it would sometimes but not every time. we had a tech come out and he said the flame sensor was just dirty and it needed to be cleaned. he cleaned up the furnace and it ran fine the rest of winter. now this year we woke up in the morning to the house at 53 degrees but it was set to 70 degrees. the thermostat said the heat was on but it wasn't. we went to the furnace turned it off then back on and it was fine. worked for another week or so and now i came home from work and the furnace was running it said the heat was on but it was blowing cold air. i went to the furnace and it wasn't even lit but it was just running blowing cold air(for how long i don't even want to know), so i turned it off then back on and it lit and started running just fine.... please someone help me and tell me what could be going on. I have a York Diamond 90 furnace
-
ANSWER:
Sounds like a bad high limit switch. Make sure furnace filter is not plugged also.
If you removed the furnace panel, look for the control board. If equipped it will have on board diagnostics. There is a LED light that will be flashing (it will only flash if the furnace has gone into a shutdown mode and wont return until the problem triggers the led code). On the inside your furnace panel should be the fault codes. Count the number of flashes and check the code chart. That will point you in the right direction. you can post back on here what you find

QUESTION:
What would cause furnace to not ignite all burners?
York 90 gas furnace with electric ignition. The igniter glows, click - gas flows, the first burner ignites but the other 4 do not so in about 10 seconds the flame sensor shuts it all down. Have to recycle manually to get all burners to ignite. Sometimes on first recycle, others it can be 15 or 20 recycles.
Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks all - forgot to mention we run on propane - so no free calls/checks.
The furnace (along with the house) is 12 years old. I probably used the wrong wording for "electric ignition" - it doesn't have a pilot.
-
ANSWER:
You are going to have to disconnect the power and turn off the gas to furnace. Once you have done this you need to remove the five burners, They are just connected together with a screw. Once removed inspect the slots on each burner, these are called your pilot runners. They can get clogged up with cob webs and debris. Also check each gas port coming off the manifold were your burners plug into. They also get clogged with cob webs. When you put it back together make sure everything is lined up. Turn the gas back on then the power and start the furnace this should take care of your problems. Hope this helps

QUESTION:
REPAIR COST ON GAS FURNACE.?
I live in New York City in a single family house. I just had a heating problem and needed a quick repair on my Weil-McLaine gas furnace. The gas valve failed and had to be replaced (failed to open when voltage applied). A local licensed plumber did the repair (on a weekday at approx. 2:00 P.M.) and the charge was 5.00 + tax for a job that took approx. 45 minutes. Does this seem excessive? The invoice states: "Replace gas valve, thermocouple & pilot assembly on gas fired steam boiler". The gas valve replacement was a White-Rodgers mdl. # 36C03400. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
-
ANSWER:
You are going to get charged a minimum of 1 hour labor for a service call plus travel and mileage, if applicable. Subtract the labor charges and the rest is parts. For a gas valve, thermocouple and pilot assembly, that sounds about right.

All there is to a pilot flameis a Thermocouple and the sprung energized capsule it connects to inside the valve. If youve replaced the thermocouple and its tip is in a good clean flame, then its the capsule.Isolate the gas and remove the nut where the thermocouple connects with the gas valve. Remove the coil capsule.Take it to a heating specialist and replace. The flame failure device is so basic its beautiful. Good luck

QUESTION:
Who makes Solitaire Gas Furnace Model # SG3RK072C-16?
I have contacted Airtime 500, Amana, Goodman, Lennox, Xenon, and York to no avail. Each would refer me to one of the others with the exception of Airtime, who stated they have never heard of that brand furnace before.
@Marko
Blower motor burnt out. Had it replaced and the blower would come on, but unit would not turn on the compressor outside. Repairman is stumped, so trying to find out who made it to get a copy of the wiring diagram and find what limit or safety switch the repairman wired backwards.
I'm assuming it is a case of a limit or safety switch being wired wrong as the compressor unit checks out fine. Only thing that has happened is wires being disconnected then reconnected in the furnace cabinet itself. Start with the simple things and go from there. Have to get a wiring diagram first.
-
ANSWER:
Don't know either. Maybe GE because of the G in the mn. It's a 72k btu, though. What' the matter with it?
Edit:
Condenser doesn't come on? The blower motor wouldn't affect that. Did he change the capacitor, too ?
Check power from the breaker, to the disconnect, to the contactor. See if the contacts are pulled in on the Contactor. The thermostat's r and y circuit closes, 0 volts, which sends power to the contactor, pulls in the contacts, which passes power to the compressor and c fan motor.
Let me know if I'm missing something.

QUESTION:
gas furnaces. which brand is better?
York? Trane? Goodman? or any other brand. I am planing on spending about 00 (installed) to replace the old one. what is the best i can get. my house is about 2200sft, in northern NJ.
-
ANSWER:
The November 2006 issue of Consumers Reports listed furnace manufacturers with the least repairs in a survey of 22000 people.
The Top ones included Rheem, Trane, Amana, American Standard, Rudd. Following were Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, Heil & York.
The report stated that Goodman furnaces were much less reliable than others.
Remember a furnace dealer is only going to recommend the brand they sell and service, so to them their brand is the best.
The top 4 brands are a bit more expensive and Amana has the best warranties in the industry.
You did not state where you live and prices will vary by city and dealer. In the midwest 00 will get you a very good 90-96% hi-efficient furnace like Amana, American Standard, etc.
Shop around and get some quotes from reliable HVAC dealers.

QUESTION:
I have a York PBKM, model A, computer back up furnace...?
My furnace will fire 85 % of the time with no problem. Once in a while monitoring the unit, found that the ignitor will turn on and the gas valve wont't open then the next thing that will happens is that the blower will start right after on cold mode blowing cold air into the house and at the same time the exhaust blower keeps going too to make matters worse by taking away to heat I already have in the house. Does somebody know what idiot engineer designed this one this way...? The only way to cut this problem is by turning the thermostat off and then re starting with a highest calling temperature, but is a problem when you have to wake up at night few times to do this. I am very sure is not the gas valve because when this happens, I messure no AC 24 volts going into the valve. If you guess, I tried cleaning the heat sensor, also repleced with a new one and then re located at different possitions per previous suggestions to see is this helps. I already know that the sensor is what is trigger the relay on the gas valve to opens while the ignitor is on.I am handy, but this one got me...! Please suggest...! Thanks in advance: Eddie
-
ANSWER:
The lock out feature and fan running continuously is a safety feature. Most all manufacturers have also designed in that it restarts the cycle after an hour and some models 3 hours and it will attempt to fire up again.
Also turning off the power and then back on would reset a lock out condition.
Most likely the gas valve relay in the circuit board has pitted or burned contacts allowing it to make a connection on some cycles and not on others. Unfortunately the relay cant be replaced, the circuit board would need to be replaced. This is as long as there are no faulty wiring connections between the circuit board and the gas valve.
The flame sensor only comes into play after the gas valve is energized so it wouldn't be that.
It wouldn't be any safety switches or the igniter would never be energized.

Where does Evaporator Coil go on the Hz forced air furnace?
I have a newer York forced air furnace hung from ceiling in crawl space. I'm trying to hang the Evaporator Coil, I don't know where it goes. My fan in the furnace is located on the left side of furnace. I was thinking it would be better on the left side, thinking it would slow down air more if mounted on right side. I'm also thinking the > (horizontal V) shape would be best if pointing in direction of air flow. I'm trying just to mount it, less for an installer to do as it has been partially installed by professional, gas and supply and exhaust. Please tell me how Evaporator Coil should be mounted. Thanks

QUESTION:
Heat Pump Lockout setting location?
I have a Rheem 3.5T 14 SEER 1410a Prestige series Heat Pump (2 stage cooling and heat) and a York with (multiposition 2 speed gas furnace). I have found out that the technician never installed my sensor outside, it was sitting on my furnace in the attic - bummer - no problem. The first issue I am having is, my heat pump is quiting coming on when temperature is around 50 degrees or less, the emergency aux on the thermostat which is the gas furnace is kicking on but I thought heat pumps will work until certain temperature like (35 degrees) and this is what I wish really. My thermostat is made by Rheem but I believe the original maker is Rodgers. anyway, Today's temeprature was over 50's and the heat pump never came on despite me trying to turn the thermostat off/on for a reset...I also tried to cool the house to see if teh fan will engage and the ac didn't kick on either but I can hear a humming sound outside. unit was installed June 2010.
I hear that the heat pump have lockout settings - i took it apart but I could never find the lockout setting device so I can verify at what temperature factory has it on...and I am thinking maybe my thermostat needs replacement...Lost like you never believe

ANSWER:
I don't have direct knowledge of the Rheem 2 stage system but have done some research. Unfortunately I have run out of time but will give you a more detailed answer of what I have found tomorrow if you don't mind waiting.
Edit:
After reading much about the Rheem Prestige series I found there are so many configurations and options that without the model number I can't really give you any specific info. The systems do allow for an optional outdoor air thermostat but it sounds to me like there must already be one installed as there would be no other reason that I can see that your heat pump wouldn't run unless there was another fault in it. The Rheem thermostats are indeed made by White Rogers and several options are available there too including an intelligent one with 2 wire communications. I can say that this system could be a low voltage wiring nightmare for an installer/technician since your heating system could have up to 4 stages of heat. You would really need the proper thermostat, wiring and a very smart/trained tech to set this system up correctly. If you want to message me through my profile with more detailed information about your system I would be glad to give my advice/opinions. Good luck!

QUESTION:
Is there a minimum length requirement for combustion air intake on a 95% eff gas furnance?
I am installing a York 95.5% efficient furnace. Per instructions the
vent PVC pipe must be a minimum lenght of 5'. My question is
there any reason the combustion air intake PVC pipe would require
a minimum lenght. The furnace is located next to an outside
wall and I would like to run the combustion air intake pipe
straight out the side of the furnace and through the wall
about 2' total in lenght. The exhaust pvc pipe would have the
5' minimun and would be located on the same outside wall about
3.5' to 4' above the intake.
-
ANSWER:
I see enough of an increase in air pressure from a 2 foot intake to effect the whole system's air balance design. Two feet is very short, so air will be roaring in way above static air design and effect the system on down the line. It will result in a larger amount of air to be heated during the heat exchange, which will lower the temperature of the supplied air, condensation amounts will be different, exhaust temps will be different, the efficiency will be different. It might even void any warranty.
Suppose the combustion air was open directly to the outside, there would be no controlling the air flow, so a run of pvc at the certain length will control a designed amount of air.
I'm not a contractor or a designer but I'm just trying to think it through and, to me, it's a logical cause and effect.

QUESTION:
Help with a "LUX TX900TS" thermostat wiring .?
I replaced my thermostat several months ago but I only checked to see if the heat and cool would turn on . Now that it has gotten cold , we finally turned on the heat and the furnace runs non stop . The A/C operated fine during the summer . When I turn the switch to heat , the fan starts right up and the heat follows but the thermostat is not sending a signal to turn the heat on . I'm sure I have the programming right and am convinced the the wiring is wrong . The furnace and A/C are made by YORK and it is gas not electric , It is also about ten years old . Besides that I do not have a model # off hand . There is no heaat pump involved . If this helps , you can look up the manual at ( www.luxproducts.com ).I have the following wire hooked up in this order from left to right :
W=white
Y=yellow
G=green
B=brown
O=orange
RC=jumped to RH
RH=red
C=black
There is also a blue wire wrapped around all the others , This was originally wrapped with the white wire on the old thermostat .

QUESTION:
Should i get a heat pump system for my house?
I have a relatively small house with good insulation in cincinnati. I currently have a old fuel oil furnace (30 yrs old) with separate central air unit (7 yrs old). The Furnace is toast and im debating whether to replace both with a heat-pump and air handler. I have a good quote on a York 15 SEER heat pump installed. Are Heat Pumps reliable? Is York a good Brand?
*Additionally i dont have natural gas in my house so that is out of the question.
ok for the people recommending natural gas, you must have not read my post fully.
-
ANSWER:
I would guess you are talking about an air source heat pump and not ground source heat pump.
An air source heat pump pic's out heat in the outside air, compresses it in the refrigerant and rejects it inside the home.
This works well when outdoor temps are above 40 degrees.
When it gets colder there is less heat to be picked out of the air and some other method of heat has to be used. Typically the air handler will be equipped with electric resistance heat that will kick in when the heat pump can no longer provide enough heat to heat the home.
Some systems will be set up to use a gas furnace instead of electric resistance heat for the backup.
Ground source heat pumps do not need back up due to the constant temperatures the earth provides but typically cost -,000.00 to install.
If you have no natural gas in the area a propane tank could be brought in easily to provide the gas for a gas furnace.
Your local contractor should be able to provide you with the information you need to determine what system will be the best for you and your budget.
A heat pump will be more expensive than a gas furnace.
York is a good brand.

QUESTION:
Replacing Central Air System in my house?
I have two -- 5 ton AC (York - 12 SEER, Freon)) central air condition units for my Las Vegas area house. Roughly 3600 sq. feet, two story. I have central gas heating units. They both work, but I doubt they are very efficient based on the SHOCK I get when opening the electric bills in the summer. I have had the units serviced and they are working. Service people tell me I really should consider replacing with more efficient units I have had a few people out for estimates. One was particularly interesting as he is quoting to only replace the outside units and the coil in the furnace (and not the actual furnace). Can they be done? The freon lines to the outside units are 3/4 inch. Can I reuse these are do I need to go to 1 inch? Thanks for any help.

ANSWER:
Between 1.3-1.5 million people were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz -- more than 90% were Jews. The other ten percent were Poles, Soviet Prisoners of War, Sinti Roma, Jehovah Witnesses, homosexuals and others. The vast majority of the victims --who came from both Western and Eastern Europe including Belgium, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and other countries-- were unaware of their destination and of their fate. They were transported like animals in cattle-cars and arrived in a state of total collapse to the camp. Most of the people actually never really entered the camp, but just crossed it on the way to the gas chambers.
The dehumanized minority often became registered prisoners with shaved heads in striped uniforms. Jews chosen for slave labor were stripped of everything, including outward differentiation between male and female. Prisoners' personal identities were taken mainly by the act of tattooing their arms with numbers -- replacing their personal names.
How did prisoners endure such insurmountable conditions on a daily basis?
For example, Jack Oran, a Holocaust survivor, relates:
"Everyone worked so hard, got beaten up…and came back to the camp -- the exhaustion alone pushed him to the bunk to lie down and sleep throughout the night and get enough strength so that s/he might be able to do that again tomorrow. …In the morning, sixty percent of the six people [in the bunk] did not wake up. The other forty percent went over the pockets of the dead people to find a piece of bread…The hygienic condition was very, very poor in that period. I remember that I searched a dead body in the bunk and I found a piece of bread. That piece of bread was crawling with lice and you shook them off the bread and put it in your mouth and ate it. We all were crawling with lice. Taking a shower was not an option. To get out in the morning, to walk toward the barrack where there is water, running water &endash; you didn't want to walk through mud. If you walked through the mud you probably lost a shoe and then you had to go barefoot. So it would be damned if I do and damned if I don't. Those were the conditions."
Although the Nazis terrorized and dehumanized prisoners in Auschwitz, as well as in other concentration camps under their control, many Jews attempted to retain their dignity and humanity.
Even in unendurable conditions, people sought support, cooperation and friendship. For instance, Ovadiah Baruch, a young Jewish prisoner who was deported to Auschwitz from Greece, notes that the support of his friends helped him survive. He states:
"During the death marches [from Auschwitz] we were three friends, Yom Tov Eli, Michael and I. We were connected heart and soul. Throughout the whole time we were prisoners in Auschwitz we stayed in close contact….During the death marches, Michael developed dysentery. He was so weak that he could barely continue to walk, and he begged us to go on without him. Yom Tov Eli and I insisted that we would carry him and support him as best as we could."
